About the Item

A stunning and rare Black Bear figurine sitting on platform. This was designed in 1935 by Etienne Frankhauser for J A Jobling -In the late 1920s and 1930 the famous English Glass house of J A Jobling tried their hand at copying the Rene Lalique style of glass making and employed Frankhauser (Rene Lalique's Mould maker) to design a number of pieces for them, the rarest and most impressive of which were a series of medium small animal paperweights usually in clear and 'opalique' This example is exceptionally rare being in black -the only example of a black Jobling paperweight we have ever seen. The design was registered in the UK Reg No 799634 in 1935 (the registration mark is visible in the last picture and it was probably only made briefly as the image was later licenced to Fox's Glacier Mints. The last picture shows the Bear with other Jobling Paperweights -also available separately in our other 1stdibs listings

Art Deco Ceramic Bear Sculpture by Desbarbieux, Saint-Clément, 1920s

Art Deco Ceramic Bear Sculpture by Desbarbieux, Saint-Clément, 1920s

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

This striking French Art Deco ceramic sculpture depicts a powerful black bear and was designed by Desbarbieux for the Saint-Clément manufactory in France during the 1920s. Combining a bold silhouette with carefully modeled details, the piece reflects the strong interest in stylized animal sculpture that characterized French decorative arts between the wars. The bear is presented in a long, low profile, giving the sculpture a dynamic and sculptural presence. Its deep black ceramic surface is enhanced by subtle bronze-green patination applied within the recessed areas of the eyes, ears, mouth, and signature. These carefully placed accents add depth, contrast, and visual richness while emphasizing the animal’s expressive features. Measuring 18.5 inches (47 cm) in width, 13.8 inches (35 cm) in height, and 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) in depth, this substantial ceramic sculpture is ideal for display on a console, mantel, sideboard, bookshelf, or pedestal. Its elegant proportions allow it to complement Art Deco, modernist, traditional, eclectic, or contemporary interiors. The sculpture bears the artist’s name, “Desbarbieux,” within the mold and is stamped “St Clément Made in France” on the interior, confirming its authorship and French manufacture. The Saint-Clément pottery, located in northeastern France, is well known for its decorative ceramics and artistic production. This rare 1920s French Art Deco bear sculpture...
