About the Item

A characterful early-19th-century English Georgian dry-goods measure, dating to circa 1820 and constructed from hand-hammered copper with substantial wrought iron reinforcement. The deep, slightly tapered copper vessel retains the irregular surface and hammer marks associated with traditional hand-working. A large iron loop handle extends from the body, incorporating a raised thumb grip and lower rest designed to provide greater control when lifting and tipping the measure while full. The construction is notably robust. A flat wrought iron reinforcement runs from the lower section into the handle, helping distribute the considerable strain generated through repeated use. The base is additionally protected by a broad iron band, secured using traditional riveted construction. Measures of this type were practical working objects used in agricultural and commercial environments such as farms, mills, granaries and maltings, where grain, malt, seed and other dry commodities were routinely measured by volume. The copper has developed a particularly attractive warm patina, complemented by darker oxidation to the ironwork. Numerous dents, marks and areas of wear remain visible throughout, providing an evocative record of its utilitarian history rather than detracting from its decorative appeal. Today, its sculptural form, hand-worked surface and contrasting copper and iron construction make it an appealing piece of Georgian vernacular metalwork as well as a distinctive decorative object.
