About the Item

A stunning and exceptionally rare Art Nouveau pinecone pattern art pottery jug applied with a snake decorated in iridescent glazes by world renowned ceramic artist Jerome Massier (French, 1850-1916) dating from the latter end of the 19th century. The finely potted jug has been hand crafted with a wide squat round body with a large raised pouring spout and a lizard body formed recessed handle, the spout forming the head and with a snake set within the handle with its tail trailing around the lower body of the jug. The body of the jug is decorated with trailing fir tree branches applied with pinecones and these are decorated in wonderful golden iridescent detail against a red iridescent ground spattered with golden flecking. The vase is believed to be an experimental piece by Jerome, possibly for exhibition and is signed by him in two places with a ‘Jerome Massier Fils’ signature along the lower of the jug and a similar signature with’ Vallauris (am)’ to the base. Jerome Massier was better known for his work in colored majolica pottery, and it is extremely rare to find pieces using lustre glazes which were created and more traditionally associated with his older brother Clement. Provenance: Originating from a very choice collection of lustreware with original collectors label to the base … acquired in the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear commensurate with age and use.
