About the Item

One of the most collectible forms in English ceramics, the Mason's Hydra jug is instantly recognisable — and this is a fine example. Produced by Mason's Patent Ironstone China between c.1815 and 1845, this substantial octagonal jug stands 9 inches tall and carries the iconic green serpent handle that gives the Hydra form its name. The body is decorated in the Japan Basket pattern: a rich Imari-inspired palette of cobalt blue, rust orange, and gold that speaks to the orientalist obsessions of the Regency period. Mason's Ironstone was celebrated for its weight, durability, and decorative ambition — pieces that were built to last and designed to be noticed. Nearly two centuries later, this jug does both. A centrepiece piece for a dresser, a drinks table, or a collector's shelf.
