About the Item

A Very Rare Pair of English 19th Century Cobalt Blue Ground Jeweled and Gilt Double snake Handle Ewers by Copeland. Each ewer consists of a cobalt blue ground, featuring a bulbous body tapering to a narrow neck and a wide, flaring spout. Each ewer has a gilt double handle, formed as a curved structure with a sculpted serpent motif at the upper attachment and a Medusa mask at the lower attachment point. The handles extend from the upper rim to the shoulder, with molded detailing along their length. The body is divided into vertical panels outlined in gold, with alternating sections featuring jeweled and gilt decoration. The gilt ornamentation consists of foliate patterns, geometric motifs, and large radiating starburst designs. The jeweled embellishments include applied cabochons in red, turquoise, and white, arranged within the gilt framework. The shoulder and neck have additional gold patterns, including trellis designs and small diamond-shaped reserves with further applied jewels. The ewers are raised on circular stepped bases, decorated with repeating patterns of gilt scrollwork, jeweled accents, and white enamel beading. The foot is slightly flared, with a gilt rim. The interior of the spout is also gilded, with a decorative border along the edge. The connection points of the handles are reinforced with additional sculpted elements, integrating seamlessly into the overall design. England: Circa: 1870
