About the Item

This attractive pearlware jug is decorated with a dense, finely mottled cobalt blue ground reserved between broad white bands at the neck and the foot. The ovoid body tapers gently to a pinched pouring lip, with a simple loop handle of rounded section left plain in the white pearlware, whose cool bluish cast sets off the strength of the blue. The white band at the neck is painted in underglaze blue with a freely drawn scalloped lappet border, carried around and over the inside of the lip, and a molded foliate terminal beneath the spout is picked out in the same blue. The ground itself shows the soft, granular mottling characteristic of cobalt sponged or splashed onto the biscuit rather than brushed on evenly, an effect that varies from piece to piece and gives each jug of this kind its own character. Pearlware was introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in 1779 as a refinement of creamware, a small addition of cobalt to the glaze correcting the yellow cast of the earlier body and producing the cool, bright white that gives the ware its name. It was taken up across the Staffordshire potteries and beyond within a few years, and became the standard refined earthenware body of the late Georgian period. Blue grounds of this kind belong to the wider family of dipped and sponged wares, decorated at the lathe or by hand with colored slips and pigments rather than by painting or printing, and made in quantity as an inexpensive and hard-wearing alternative to porcelain. Jugs of this size and form were everyday vessels, used for beer, cider, milk, and water in ordinary households on both sides of the Atlantic. The strong, saturated blue and the plain white bands give the jug a graphic simplicity that reads as well on a modern shelf as on a painted dresser, and it holds flowers admirably.
