About the Item

A beautiful antique English blue and white transferware platter, featuring a charming pastoral landscape surrounded by an elaborate border of florals, scrolling foliage and decorative motifs. The central scene depicts an idyllic rural landscape, with a country house, mature trees and figures set within a peaceful countryside setting. The rich cobalt-blue transfer print against the crisp white ground gives the piece its classic Georgian and Victorian character. The “Rural Scenery” pattern is associated with English Staffordshire pottery and is believed to have been produced by Bathwell & Goodfellow of Burslem, with examples dating to around the early 19th century, circa 1820. The distinctive octagonal form and intricate floral border make this an especially decorative example of traditional English transferware. A wonderful piece for collectors of English ceramics and blue and white pottery, or displayed as a statement piece on a dresser, kitchen shelf or dining room wall. Copeland Spode Tower Blue and White Transferware Platter, Circa 1905 19 Inches

Copeland Spode Tower Blue and White Transferware Platter, Circa 1905 19 Inches

Located in Darien, CT

An antique English blue and white transferware platter by Copeland Spode in the enduring “Tower” pattern, dating to circa 1890. The scene features a romantic landscape with a stone bridge, riverside tower, birds in flight, and stylized trees, all rendered in richly saturated cobalt blue. The central scene is framed by a floral border with deep tonal variation and crisp detailing, while the softly molded white rim creates a striking contrast against the vivid blue decoration. That raised white border gives the platter a more sculptural, dimensional appearance than many flatter transferware examples from the period. The generous scale makes it especially versatile — beautiful displayed on a wall, layered into a blue and white collection, or used as a serving piece at table. A classic example of late 19th century English Staffordshire transferware that works equally well in traditional interiors, English country settings, and more collected contemporary spaces. Marked underside: “Copeland Spode’s Tower...
