About the Item

Gustavian Pewter Plate by Carl Gustaf Malmborg, Stockholm, 1767–1806 A charming Swedish Gustavian pewter plate by the noted master pewterer Carl Gustaf Malmborg, active in Stockholm between 1767 and 1806. This piece embodies the restrained elegance and honest materiality that characterize late 18th-century Swedish decorative arts. The broad-rimmed form is beautifully proportioned, with a gently recessed well and wide cavetto. The surface bears a softly mottled patina, attractively worn and time-darkened, offering a tactile reminder of more than two centuries of use. The reverse is struck with the maker’s mark, the city mark for Stockholm, and additional hallmarks, affirming its origin and authenticity. Three distinct owner’s inscriptions grace the back, layering the object with personal history and quiet narrative — a testament to its enduring presence across generations. An evocative and decorative example of Swedish Gustavian pewter, equally compelling displayed on a wall, atop a commode, or incorporated into a curated table setting. Wear consistent with age and use.
