About the Item

This monumental blue printed platter is decorated in the ‘Greek’ pattern, one of the most ambitious of the neoclassical transfer designs of the Regency period. The dish is of shaped oval form with a broad, canted rim and gently indented corners, the print laid on in a deep and saturated blue that fills the ground and leaves the figures reserved in white, in direct imitation of the red-figure vases from which the designs were taken. The center is filled with a continuous frieze of classical subjects set around an oval reserve of laurel within a palmette border. Above runs a chariot drawn by a team of horses, with draped figures standing in the car, a winged Cupid flying before them and a rosette in the field; below, a second chariot is drawn by winged griffins. Attendant figures, a tripod, an altar, and scattered classical attributes fill the remaining ground. The rim carries a bold Greek key fret enclosing six oval reserves of further classical figures, divided by panels of anthemion, the whole edged with a band of beading and a narrow palmette border at the well. The ‘Greek’ pattern was taken directly from Thomas Kirk’s engravings after the vases in Sir William Hamilton’s collection, published as Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir Wm. Hamilton (London: William Miller, 1804). The plates brought the linear austerity of ancient vase painting before a wide British public, and the medium of blue transfer printing reproduced their character remarkably well, the reserved white figures on a saturated blue ground answering closely to the originals. Spode introduced its version of the pattern in about 1805, and it was among the most successful of the neoclassical printed designs. The Herculaneum Pottery at Toxteth in Liverpool, in production from 1796 until 1840, issued its own series drawing on the same source. Platters of this scale were the most expensive pieces in a printed dinner service and were made in far smaller numbers than the plates, so that large dishes survive comparatively rarely. At nineteen and a half inches it makes a considerable statement laid on a sideboard or hung on a wall, and the depth of the blue carries across a room.
