About the Item

These very fine dishes are of a good large Size and are circular in form with a wide rim decorated with a shaped gadrooned band. Both have a deep bowl so that they could be used for serving a number of things on the dining table. The border is also engraved with a contemporary Crest surrounded by a garter engraved with the Motto "Finem Respice". The Dishes are in excellent condition, are very well marked on the reverse and are also engraved with their original scratch weight. The Crest and Mooto are those as used by the Bligh family. The family were Earls of Darnley, however this is not the enobled branch. The most famous member of the family was Rear Admiral William Bligh, known for the mutiny on HMS Bounty in 1789. A painting of Captain Bligh by Alexander Huey is shown. William Cripps was apprenticed to David Willaume, which would account for the fine quality of the dishes. He had workshops in St. James's Street when these pieces were made. As might be expected under his training under Willaume, he became an accomplised craftsman and a versatile exponent of the Rococo style; to judge from his surviving pieces he enjoyed a considerable clientele.
