About the Item

Dimensions 8 1/4 inches (20.96 cm) Diameter 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) Height Condition Report The dish is in phenomenal antique condition, showing absolutely no wear to the central well or the delicate overglaze enamels. The gilding remains remarkably bright and intact. Historical Context The "Queen Charlotte" pattern—also traditionally known as the "Catherine Wheel" or "whorl" pattern—stands as one of Worcester’s most celebrated and visually dynamic 18th-century designs. While popular tradition suggests the pattern was named after George III's royal consort following her visit to the Worcester factory in 1788, the design was actually introduced decades earlier during the First Period. As noted by ceramic scholar John Sandon in The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, Volume 1, 1751-1851 (page 103), this captivating pattern was directly inspired by an earlier Meissen porcelain prototype. Sandon also highlights that while the design is frequently found on standard tea services of the era, it appears only very occasionally on specialized dessert wares and stand forms, making this exceptionally clean tureen stand a rare find for the discerning connoisseur. Antique Delftware Dinner Plate, Georgian Style, Star Design, 1740-1750

Antique Delftware Dinner Plate, Georgian Style, Star Design, 1740-1750

Located in Downingtown, PA

Bristol Radiance: A Whimsical Sponged Manganese Star Dish English, Circa 1745 This charming and highly whimsical Bristol Delftware (tin-glazed earthenware) shallow dish dates to the mid-18th century, circa 1740 to 1750. The piece exemplifies the lively "folk art" quality for which English Delftware is renowned, offering a bold departure from formal porcelain designs. The decoration is dominated by a large, radiating star motif rendered in bright orange and green freehand strokes. At the center of the star lies a small, stylized Chinoiserie fence—a simplified abstraction of East Asian design elements popular at the time. The design is energized by highly textural sponged manganese accents, which fire to a distinctive purplish-brown, and stylized floral bursts around the rim. This spontaneous application gives the plate a sense of movement and volume characteristic of the Bristol...
