About the Item

Beautiful Japanese hand painted porcelain decorative trinket, pill or jewelry box or serving dish of Meiji period. The decoration consists of under-glaze cobalt blue deep borders near the rim, hand painted in the Kakiemon style with over-glaze enamels. The base has floral sprigs while the lid has a distinctive decoration of alternating patterns within panels of flowers and geometric shapes all in bold colored enamels of red, burnt orange, green, yellow and white. There is also additional hand gilded highlighting detail to the main pattern and the blue borders as per the images. The Meiji period, also known as the Meiji era, is a Japanese era which extended from September 1868 through July 1912. This period represents the first half of the Empire of Japan during which Japanese society moved from being an isolated feudal society to its modern form. Fundamental changes affected its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations. Measures: 6 1/2" diameter x 3 5/8" height.
