About the Item

Piero Fornasetti Armature Porcelain Plate No. 1, Armor, Milan, Circa 1960 Italy, circa 1960. Porcelain, lithographic transfer with hand-painted gilt highlights. Plate No. 1 of Fornasetti’s Armature series — the opening statement of one of his handsomest suites. A Renaissance suit of armor lies piled across the white porcelain in engraved black and white: the cuirass covered edge to edge in damascened scrollwork and classical figures, with visored helmet, gauntlet, crossed sword and dagger, and mace gathered around it, the whole trophy warmed with hand-applied gold. This is vintage Fornasetti from Piero’s own era, circa 1960, decorated in the Milan atelier on a fine Arzberg porcelain blank — German body, Italian wit — and marked accordingly: Fornasetti Milano, Made in Italy, with ARMATURE printed over the green Arzberg mark. The black-and-gold palette hangs as happily beside old master prints as over a mid-century credenza, and as the first plate of the series it is the natural starting point for building the set. Dimensions Diameter: 10¼ inches (26.0 cm) Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Marks Printed Fornasetti Milano / Made in Italy, with ARMATURE printed over the green Arzberg mark. Provenance Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge References Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, edited by Barnaba Fornasetti, p. 614, no. 162. Historical Context Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) mined the engraved archives of the past — emblems, instruments, architecture, armor — and set them spinning on modern objects with unmatched graphic flair. The Armature plates, drawn from Renaissance armor engravings, are documented in the standard Fornasetti reference and belong to the vintage Milan production most sought by collectors, distinguished from later editions by the Arzberg-blank backstamp. Armor imagery gives the series a masculine decorative register relatively rare in Fornasetti’s output — a favorite for studies, libraries, and bar walls. (Ref: NY08265-1-imr)
