Qing Dynasty Chinese Round Porcelain Ginger Jar with Lid Painted with Foo Dog

About the Item

Particular and original Chinese round porcelain ginger vase with lid; the shape and the size are very well proportioned; the knob is painted with pure gold; on the back we find some ancient Chinese writing, very complicated and difficult to interpret; after the fall of the Qing Dynasty (1911) the Republic of China was born and the Chinese Communist Party promoted the abolition of old characters and started the Romanization of Chinese writing very simplified and essential to promote cultural exchanges with the West and combat illiteracy; usually on ancient vases the writing described the vase or the goddess of the artist, on our vase we were able to know that the artist was called Song Jingxuan; while on the front is painted a "Foo's dog" in aggressive attitude; the drawing, handmade, is very detailed and the spherical shape of the vase contributes to give it a soft and pleasant movement; this kind of drawing and the color combination is typical of the late '800; the small black spots that can be noticed both inside and outside, the formation of rust (see photo) on the edge of the bottom due to the iron present in the clay (for this it takes years for it to occur), and the patina formed by ginger fumes, in addition to the typicality of the shape and design, confirm us to date the vase between 1890 and 1900 under the last years of the Qing Dynasty. The dog, in China, is an animal full of symbolism; the one depicted is called shi, which means "lion" or shishi, which means "stone lion", these animals resemble both the Chow Chow breed and the Shih Tzu breed, from which they are called "Foo dogs", they are also called Chinese lions, guardian dogs or stone dogs of the temple. The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac. 2018 was a Chinese year of the Dog, as well as 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006, and the next will be in 2030. People born under the sign of the Dog are loyal and honest, lovable and kind, but also cautious and prudent. Measures diameter cm.25, height cm.23.
