About the Item

IMPERIAL VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY (Manufacturer / 1718-1864) - JOSEF NIGG (Attributed / Painter / 1782-1863) - Rare museum quality Biedermeier porcelain cup and saucer from the much celebrated Matthias Niedermayer period - the cup features an elaborate hand-painted small-scale floral still-life in a clear glass vase, sitting on a marble ledge, set against a chocolate brown background (while the piece does not bear a formal painter's number, a common occurrence for elite academy masters exempt from standard piece-rate tallies, the handling of the translucent petals, the dark chocolate backdrop, and the stone ledge are the absolute signature hallmarks of Josef Nigg, and the set is confidently attributed to his workshop) - the cup with a gilt decorated coiled serpent handle and three lion's paw feet - hand painted gilded details throughout including butterflies, swags, lozenges with central rosettes along with bands of gold to the interior of the cup - both pieces with variations of a chamois ground color - impressed date and model numbers to the base of each - the cup numbers are 38 (Philipp Knaus, master Weißbäcker or white-potter, shaper) / 817 (year 1817) / 20 (cup shape or model number), saucer 818 (year 1818) / 50 (Anton Reiner, shaper) / 25 (model number) - hand-painted under-glaze blue Bindenschild to the base of each - Austria (Vienna) - circa 1817 and 1818. Excellent antique condition with age appropriate wear - the feature painting and the handle are in pristine condition - a couple of minor rim chips / flakes to the cup with some over-painting in gold - a couple of very minor flea bites to the feet (only viewable with magnification) - minor over-all scratches, rubbing and loss to the gilding - no cracks - the saucer is in fine, original condition - signs of age and use. Cup Size / Dimensions - 2 7/8" Wide x 3 3/4" Deep x 3 7/8" High. Saucer Size / Dimensions - 6" Diameter x 1 1/4" High. Weight - 0.670 Lbs.
