About the Item

This handsome pair of green-glazed earthenware dishes is molded in the form of overlapping vine leaves, a large leaf laid over two smaller ones, with deeply serrated edges, crisply modeled veining, and a finely stippled ground between the ribs. A knotted twig-form loop handle springs from the stalk end of each dish. The two are modeled in opposition, one turning to the left and the other to the right, as intended for symmetrical placement on the dessert table. The rich green glaze pools darker in the recesses of the modeling and thins over the raised veins and serrations, giving the surface a depth and movement that carries the whole effect of these otherwise undecorated dishes. Each is impressed BRAMELD beneath, the mark used by the family throughout their tenure of the Swinton works. The Brameld family operated the pottery at Swinton in Yorkshire from 1806 until 1842, holding interests over the same period at the Don and Mexborough works nearby. Swinton had been run in partnership with the Leeds Pottery from the later 1780s until 1806, after which the Bramelds concentrated their efforts on the one site, sustained by the patronage of their landlord, Earl Fitzwilliam. In 1826 the factory was renamed the Rockingham Works in honor of the Earl’s uncle, the Marquis of Rockingham, and under the Bramelds’ direction it became known for an extraordinary range of earthenware and stoneware in the popular decorative styles of the day. Green-glazed wares of this kind revived a taste established in the Staffordshire of Whieldon and the young Josiah Wedgwood in the 1750s and 1760s, and were made in quantity for the dessert service, where leaf-form dishes of this type served fruit, nuts, and sweetmeats. Displayed on a dresser or a painted shelf, or used as they were intended for fruit and nuts at the end of a meal, the strong green and the crisp modeling read beautifully against both painted and polished wood.
