About the Item

Exclusive set of Mexican Majolica plates, signed by Gorky Gonzalez Quiñones with "GTO MEX" and "Gorky" markings, once owned by legendary NYC socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor. A treasured find for collectors and enthusiasts of unique pieces with a story to tell! Gorky González Quiñones (1939–2017) was a prominent Mexican potter who received the prestigious award “Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes” for saving Mexican Majolica from extinction. Majolica pottery was introduced to Mexico in the early 1500’s. Puebla, being the center of production with rich indigenous clay deposits, formed a potters’ guild regulating Majolica production by requiring signatures, logos, and manufacturer locations during the 1600's. Gorky González was first introduced to Spanish Majolica during the 1900’s when two antique Majolica pots were brought into his antique shop. At the time, Majolica was nearly extinct in his region. Being formerly trained in Mexican and Japanese pottery techniques, he learned to how to make Majolica in his Guanajuato ceramics workshop, ultimately saving Mexican Majolica from extinction. Today, his original work exhibits around the world. Brooke Astor (1902-2007) NYC’s greatest philanthropist, legendary socialite, tastemaker, author, and magazine editor to Vogue, Vanity Fair, and House and Garden, lived to be 105 years old! She married billionaire Vincent Astor, whose great-great-grandfather John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) was America’s first multi-millionaire from real estate, fur, and opium trade. Vincent’s father John Jacob Astor IV (1864-1912) died early aboard the RMS Titanic leaving Vincent (1891-1959), then a freshman at Harvard, heir to the family fortunes. Vincent died of a heart attack five years into their marriage leaving Brooke in charge of the Vincent Astor Foundation, its mission being “the alleviation of human misery.” The Astor fortunes were built in NYC, which is why Brooke chose to donate over $200 million to NYC libraries, schools, museums, hospitals, homeless shelters, historic preservation, animal welfare and community programs. New York Times called her “NYC’s First Lady of Philanthropy,” others called her “NYC’s Fairy Godmother." She was personally involved (at some level), knowing and advocating for the organizations she gave to. Being a high society figure, wherever she went and whoever she met in the city, out of respect she dressed up in her signature matching suits, hats, gloves, and jewels. She knew they expected to see Mrs. Astor, not a drab old lady, she wouldn’t dare think of disappointing them! A prominent socialite, she hired legendary Albert Hadley and Sister Parish to design her Park Ave. apartment where she entertained presidents and First Ladies like Jackie Kennedy (Jackie also hired Albert Hadley and Sister Parish), writers, philanthropists, designers, and celebrities like Oscar and Annette de la Renta, David Rockefeller, Barbara Walters, and Camilla Parker Bowles. Albert Hadley designed her illustrious red-lacquer and brass-trimmed library, one of the most celebrated interiors of the 20th Century. Sister Parish designed Brooke's summer estate in Northeast Harbor Maine, followed by Mark Hampton and Nancy Pierrepont, rooms were layered in chintzy botanical patterns. It is this harbor colonial estate that these plates were acquired from. We know it’s hard to find one-of-a-kind pieces! Antique hand-painted plate, from Ann & Gordon Getty's antiquity collection

Antique hand-painted plate, from Ann & Gordon Getty's antiquity collection

Located in Scottsdale, AZ

Antique hand-painted pottery plate, part of Gordon and Ann Getty's personal antiquity collection, the Getty's acquired at Christie's South Kensington Auction, July 28, 1995, Lot 25. A treasured find for collectors and enthusiasts of unique and one-of-a-kind pieces with a story to tell! Ann Getty was a paleoanthropologist, tastemaker, interior designer, and author. Married to Gordon Getty, billionaire philanthropist, classical music composer, the 4th son of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. They were chic intellectual Bay Area socialites, supportive advocators for the arts, music, science, and education. The J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Center, and Getty Villa, exhibit Getty's private art and antiquity collections, the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund is the world’s wealthiest art institution. Anne grew up on dairy, peach, and walnut farms in northern California, then graduated from UC Berkeley with dual degrees in Biology and Anthropology. She supported archaeological digs in Ethiopia and Turkey, searched for human fossils and artifacts, studied genetics and DNA structures. She was unpretentious, hands on, intellectually in synch with scientists, craftsmen, and artists. There’s a photo of her restoring ancient fossilized buffalo horns at the National Museum of Ethiopia. She applied these personal traits, mannerisms, curiosity, and keen eye in her approach to collecting art and antiques, first student, then connoisseur. She knew the provenance and story behind every piece she acquired. She taught herself by observing, experimenting, and absorbing everything. She employed artists that became her greatest teachers. Prior to launching her interior design firm she hired legendary designers Albert Hadley, Sister Parish, and John Stefanidis to design her Pacific Heights estate, an early 1900’s sprawling Italianate mansion with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, designed by architect Willis Polk. The estate was nicknamed the “San Francisco Embassy” for its lavish political and cultural parties. Shortly after opening her interior design firm she launched "The Ann Getty House Collection," a line of antique reproductions inspired by her personal collection, produced by old world craftsman Luis Rossi (L Rossi Antiques...
