About the Item

Vintage stoneware teapot features whimsical, exaggerated shape, accentuated with colorful glaze. The body and the lid are decorated with quirky red and cream checkered pattern, and the spout, handles, and the rim - with teal green glaze, pained over the traditional salt glaze background. The playful approach to forms and colors shows the Post Modern and Memphis Milano influence, while the use of functional form, together with salt glaze, references traditional American studio pottery of Craftsman Movement and Folk Art traditions. The teapot is signed on the bottom in pencil "loren" and comes with the art gallery card; the card identifies the artist as Loren Chen (misspelled as Lauren), and dates the object to 2002. Dwo Wen Chen (aka Loren Chen, aka Luke Chen) is an established studio pottery artist. He graduated from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1989 with MA in Art Education, and worked as a studio potter since 1990; in 2011 Chen opened Three Wheel Studio in Providence, Rhode Island. Chen states: "The focus of my pottery making is to create functional stoneware that enhances my collector's daily life. I create pottery with a combination of hand-building and wheel throwing techniques with painterly glaze and underglaze decoration." Chen's work is represented in multiple galleries nationwide and can be seen in important public collections, such as Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston and Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. Sculptural, highly decorative teapot with graphic, abstract sculptural form, high-quality artisanal craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Arts and Crafts, Organic Modern, Modern Heritage, Post Modern, Modern Country, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary.
