A very fine & impressively large silver plated soup tureen by Elkington & Company of London with a capacity to hold 4 quarts. The substantial oval body having open handles, richly decorated with embossed & engraved foliate motifs & centered by blank foliate cartouches, the conforming lid bearing engraved heraldic crests. Raised overall upon a stepped oval foot, with the underside bearing impressed factory marks for Elkington & Co., together with date letter for 1884. In extremely good overall condition, and priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace. ELKINGTON & COMPANY: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover and patent the silver plating process in the 1830's. A fine and impressive antique Edwardian English sterling silver sugar caster, an addition to our silver teaware collection. This fine antique Edwardian sterling silver sugar caster has a baluster form onto a circular domed spreading foot. The upper and lower portions of this piece are embellished with embossed and chased bead and scroll decoration accenting concave bordered, fluted decoration all in a spiral design. The sugar caster retains the original hallmarked screw fit cover, embellished with pierced decoration incorporating chased and embossed bead and scroll decoration, the screw fit attachment indicates the fine quality of this piece. The cover is further ornamented with a gadroon decorated border to the rim and is surmounted by a fine and impressive scroll decorated shaped baluster style finial.
