About the Item

Antique Sheffield Food Warmer/Serving Dish with Built-in Hot Water Reservoir, with Hinged Cover, Turned Wooden Handles and Wood Finial. The Reservoir fills from right or left side with hinged spouts. The hinged top with wooden finial has engraved bright work along hinge point, the balance with gadrooning on the edges. Old Sheffield Plate (c. 1740–1840) is a distinct type of silver-plated item that was invented in Sheffield by Thomas Boulsover in 1742. It was made by fusing a sheet of silver to an ingot of copper and then rolling the composite into a workable sheet. This technique allowed for the creation of elegant silverware at a lower cost than solid silver.
