About the Item

A remarkable and unusually large five-piece Victorian silver-plated tea and coffee service by Johnson & Co., dating to approximately 1879–1899. Comprising an impressive large kettle/teapot, smaller teapot, coffee pot, sugar bowl and milk jug, this exceptional set is distinguished by its monumental scale, elaborate chased decoration and richly ornamented Kashmir/Paisley-inspired design. The service has an unmistakable grand Victorian character, evocative of the interiors and entertaining traditions of the late 19th-century country house. Its substantial proportions and highly decorative surfaces make it as much a statement of design as a functional tea and coffee service. Each piece is extensively decorated with chased scrolling foliage and Paisley-inspired ornament, worked against a textured ground. The decoration continues across the lids, handles and bodies, creating a remarkably cohesive ensemble. Multiple ornamental bands provide definition and structure, while each piece features a distinctive empty oval cartouche, allowing for the possibility that the service was originally intended for personalisation. The large kettle/teapot is particularly impressive. Measuring approximately 12 inches in height, it features an unusual supporting bar at the base, allowing the vessel to be tilted for pouring rather than lifted. This is an especially striking feature and contributes to the exceptional scale and character of the piece. All five pieces are marked to the underside with EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver). The service is further identified by pattern number 1039, while the large kettle/teapot bears the additional pattern number 2589. The pieces are attributed to Johnson & Co., a maker associated with high-quality Victorian electroplated wares. The set is presented here with a large antique butler's tray with an inlaid shell centre, available separately. The tray can be paired with the service to create an especially impressive presentation for a sideboard, dining room or entertaining setting. Please enquire if you would like further details regarding the tray. Measurements Large Kettle / Teapot Height: 12 in. Width: 9 in. Base diameter: 7 in. Weight: approximately 1.48 kg Smaller Teapot Height: 8 in. Width: 9.5 in. Base diameter: 5.25 in. Weight: approximately 0.86 kg Coffee Pot Height: 10.5 in. Width: 9.5 in. Base diameter: 5 in. Weight: approximately 1.20 kg Sugar Bowl Height: 5 in. Width: 7.5 in. Base diameter: 4.75 in. Weight: approximately 0.52 kg Milk Jug Height: 5 in. Width: 5.75 in. Base diameter: 3⅜ in. Weight: approximately 0.32 kg Condition Very good to excellent antique condition, with the service having clearly been exceptionally well cared for. There is very little loss to the silver plate and the decoration remains exceptionally well preserved. There are no significant scratches or other notable condition issues. The coffee pot has one small dent to the lower edge/base, mentioned for complete transparency but relatively insignificant in the overall presentation. The hinges remain in excellent working order. The pieces have been carefully cleaned and inspected, including the intricate chased decoration and recessed areas. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed representation of the condition. EPNS EPNS stands for Electro Plated Nickel Silver. Nickel silver is a copper, nickel and zinc alloy containing no solid silver; a layer of silver is deposited onto the surface through an electrolytic plating process. Victorian electroplated wares allowed manufacturers to create highly elaborate and impressive silver-like objects at a considerably lower cost than solid silver. A Statement Victorian Service This is an unusually imposing and decorative example of Victorian electroplated tableware. The combination of its exceptional scale, elaborate chased Paisley decoration, cohesive five-piece composition and unusual large pouring kettle makes it particularly suitable for collectors of Victorian decorative arts, grand country-house interiors and historic entertaining pieces. A superb decorative centrepiece for a substantial sideboard, dining room, display cabinet or country-house-inspired interior, with considerable visual presence even when not in use.
