Vintage Sterling Silver Canteen of Cutlery for Eight Persons

By Gee & Holmes

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

The pieces of this exceptional vintage straight* sterling silver flatware set for 8 persons have been crafted in the Hanoverian rat tail pattern. The surface of each rounded handle is embellished with a pip to the terminal, in addition to the contemporary engraved initial 'A'. Each silver spoon, fork and ladle features rat tail ornamentation to the reverse. The original silver forks have three tines/prongs; these are highly desirable. This sterling silver flatware set for 8 consists of 81 pieces: Basic Service: 8 Table knives 8 Table forks 8 Soup spoons 8 Dessert knives 8 Dessert forks 8 Dessert spoons 8 Teaspoons 8 Fish knives 8 Fish forks Additional Pieces: 4 Serving spoons Pair of sauce ladles Carving knife Carving fork Sharpening steel This impressive service benefits from a fine and impressive sterling silver bladed fish service. The fundamental components of this vintage service have been crafted by the Sheffield silversmiths Gee & Holmes in 1959; the components will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the items are struck with the date letters Q and R. The table and dessert knives, in addition to the fish service and carving service, are fitted with composite handles, embellished with the original stained initials 'A'; this initial reflects that engraved to the spoons, forks and ladles. The table and dessert knives are fitted with stainless steel blades bearing the mark 'Harrods Ld, G.H. Knightsbridge.S.W., Stainless'. This exceptional sterling silver English cutlery set is fitted to a veneered walnut lift up lid canteen box, with a velvet lined interior. The cover of the canteen is embellished with a cartouche, ornamented with the engraved initial 'A'. * "Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.
