About the Item

A finely worked 18th-century silver dish, fashioned in a shallow oval form with a pronounced lobed body and a pair of applied openwork scroll handles. The interior is centered by a boldly rendered repoussé bird with outstretched wings, surrounded by chased and embossed ornament. The exterior is divided into a rhythmic series of rounded lobes, providing individual panels for the engraved Hebrew inscription. The vessel incorporates elements of Baroque and Rococo silverwork, particularly evident in its sculptural lobed construction, curvilinear silhouette, scrolling handles, and vigorous repoussé decoration. These fashionable European decorative elements are here combined with a Hebrew dedicatory inscription, giving the piece its distinctly Jewish character. Engraved around the sides is the inscription: נאום יוסף ב"הרר פסח identifying the individual associated with the dish as Yosef, son of R. Pesach. A further inscription reads: ז בשבט בשנת ת"קלל" recording the dedication on the 7th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, together with the Hebrew year. The personal inscription and carefully recorded date lend the vessel an important documentary quality, connecting an accomplished example of period European silverwork with the life of its Jewish owner or recipient. Its unusual lobed form, expressive repoussé decoration, and surviving Hebrew dedication make it an appealing example of 18th-century Jewish silver and material culture. 1.32ozt
