About the Item

An antique silver bowl from renowned Norwegian silversmith Henrik Moller. This petite handcrafted bowl is a wonderful example of the deeply Norwegian style for which Moller was known. Working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Moller embraced forms and motifs taken directly from Norwegian heritage, a reflection of the period's Romantic movement when Norway re-identified its culture and identity in the period following 1814 when the country established its independence from Denmark. This cup celebrates that movement in its resemblance of a traditional Sámi drinking vessel, similar to a Kovsh or Kasa. It's flat handles are beautifully decorated with Stag's heads, a symbol of renewal and a nod to the Norwegian landscape. The outer rim of the bowl is lined with rings that helped those who quaffed from it to maintain their grip. It is possible these once suspended other rings or ornaments, though often they are undecorated. This form speaks to what is commonly known as a loving cup, a celebratory drinking vessel form found in different cultures. This beautiful piece is marked to the base by the creator, H. Moller, Trondhjem, and with the silver standard, 830S. It weighs approximately 2.41 ozt Henrik Bertram Møller of Trondheim (1858-1937) was a renowned Norwegian goldsmith of exceptional talent. He is perhaps best remembered for the exceptional works he created in the Norwegian "Dragestil", a Norse revival style that ran parallel to the Arts & Crafts movement. His finely crafted and exquisitely designed works was collected by both royalty and the exceptionally wealthy industrialists of the time; today, many of these works can be found in museum collections including the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo. In 1900 Henrik established the Henrik Møllers Metalvarefabrik to expand his range, producing fine silver services and decorative elements for the home.
