About the Item

An Elegant English silver Kiddush goblet and spice tower compendium from London, 1927, is a valuable and culturally significant piece of Judaica. The Jewish community in England has a rich history, and by the early 20th century, London was home to a vibrant and culturally active Jewish population. English silver craftsmanship is known for its high quality and attention to detail. This Piece of Judaica reflects a blend of traditional Jewish themes and English craftsmanship. The compendium is set on a circular stepped base and cylindrical stem. The buttercup-shaped bowl is engraved with draped laurel wreaths and foliate motifs. Spice container is fitted into the mouth of the goblet and is furnished with four hanging bells. The container is equipped with a compartment for spices, a latched door for inserting spices, and a tall castle spire crowned with a ball and flag finial. The compendium combines essential items for Jewish rituals: the Kiddush goblet for sanctifying the Sabbath and holidays, and the spice tower for the Havdalah ceremony. Such sets were not only functional but also served as decorative pieces, reflecting the owner’s wealth and devotion. Judaica items from the early 20th century, especially complete sets like this compendium, are relatively rare and highly valued by collectors. Marked on the main body, upper spice container, and flag finial. 3.81ozt.
