About the Item

An ornate German silver covered cup raised on three sculptural feet, the domed lid surmounted by a finely modelled standing bear finial. The cylindrical body is richly decorated in high relief with scrolling foliage, strapwork and textured ground panels, interspersed with figural scenes of traditionally dressed male figures framed within cartouche-style borders. A continuous band of Gothic-style script encircles the upper rim, adding to the historicising character of the design. The three feet are cast as winged cherub masks terminating in scrolling acanthus forms, providing both stability and decorative balance. The domed lid features repeating leaf motifs and engraved detail, rising to a fluted knop supporting the naturalistic bear figure. Subtle gilt highlights are visible to the base and interior, contrasting with the silver exterior and enhancing the depth of the ornament.
