About the Item

Los Castillo Taxco Silverplate and Green Enamel Dove Dish, circa 1980s A sculptural Mexican silver-plated dish by Los Castillo of Taxco, circa 1980s, designed as a stylized dove carrying a green enameled olive branch. The dove and olive branch have long served as symbols of peace, reconciliation, and renewal, giving this decorative table object an immediately recognizable meaning. The bird’s elongated, crescent-shaped body forms the shallow receptacle, while its raised head, pointed beak, and sweeping tail create a fluid modernist silhouette. Subtly modeled lines define the wing and tail feathers without interrupting the highly polished surface. A small brass-toned eye introduces a contrasting detail. Held within the dove’s beak is a separately fashioned olive branch. Its individual leaf-shaped compartments are filled with deep green enamel, providing a strong organic contrast to the reflective silver plate. The dish is elevated on small rounded ball feet, giving the form a light, sculptural appearance. Los Castillo was founded in Taxco in 1939 by the Castillo brothers, who had previously worked with William Spratling. The workshop became internationally recognized for imaginative tableware combining traditional Mexican metalworking with modern design and naturalistic imagery. The applied plaque bears the Los Castillo Taxco maker’s mark, “Hecho en Plateado / México,” and model number 334. “Plateado” identifies the piece as silver plate rather than sterling silver. Suitable as a vide-poche, jewelry tray, nut or candy dish, desk accessory, or decorative sculpture. Dimensions: 8.5 in. W × 3 in. D × 1.5 in. H. Condition: Presents well with light surface wear and minor scratching consistent with age and use.
