This striking sterling silver mezuzah case, created in Jerusalem in the mid-20th century by an artist signed “Jackson,” is a deeply sculptural and expressive work that blurs the line between ritual object and modern silver sculpture. Executed in .925 sterling silver and fully signed and marked on the reverse, the piece reflects a highly individual artistic vision rooted in spiritual symbolism. At the center is a cylindrical, pillar-like housing designed to contain the mezuzah parchment. On its front, the sacred Divine Name ש-ד-י (Shaddai) is prominently embossed. The letters are rendered in a highly original manner: their upper portions are hammered and textural, while their lower halves transform into organic, branch-like forms, evoking growth, vitality, and the Tree of Life. This fusion of calligraphy and nature gives the inscription both visual power and symbolic depth. Flanking the central column are two angels—one positioned toward the upper section and the other below—each formed from delicately shaped silver strips. Their bodies and wings are stylized rather than literal, lending them an ethereal, almost otherworldly presence. The angels appear to hover protectively around the mezuzah, reinforcing its role as a guardian of the home. Surrounding the central structure is an intricate network of branch-like vines that extend outward and downward along the sides. These vines are animated with hammered floral elements and rounded fruit-like forms, each individually worked, creating a sense of movement and organic abundance. The asymmetry and hand-wrought quality of these elements enhance the piece’s sculptural character, giving it a lively, almost celestial atmosphere. The overall composition is vertical, dynamic, and richly textured, with light catching on the hammered surfaces and open spaces between the vines and figures.
