About the Item

pair of George III berry spoonsby peter & Anne Bateman A pair of George III desert spoons with chased ribbon swags, the bowls later embossed as berry spoons, by Peter & Ann Bateman, London 1791, 3.6ozt 113gm length approx. 20 cm. Condition: No obvious damage or repair just minor age related wear to surface and to hallmarks Silver berry spoons, characterized by embossed bowls featuring fruit or floral designs, became popular in the mid-19th century Victorian era as specialized serving utensils. While associated with the 18th century, most are earlier plain Georgian spoons, later "updated" with ornate decoration during the Victorian period. Often gilded, they protected silver from acidic fruit juices Peter, Anne and William Bateman were the son, daughter-in-law (widow of Jonathan) and grandson of Hester Bateman, probably the most well known of all English lady silversmiths whose work is highly collectible
