This exceptional and large antique Victorian sterling silver pilgrim vase has a compressed oval flask form*. The lower portion of the oval body is encompassed to the lower portion with alternating chased fluted and batwing decoration. The swept neck of the vase is ornamented with a moulded girdle surmounting further chased fluted decoration. The upper rim of the vase/flask is encircled with an applied moulded border. This impressive flask is fitted with a hinged domed cover, surmounted with an impressive cast organic decorated finial. This Victorian silver pilgrim flask / vase is supported by an oval domed foot accented with a further chased fluted decoration. Such large and exceptional regimental examples are rare to the market; this pilgrim vase/flask was acquired from the Berwick regiment and Kings Own Scottish Border Museum. A Victorian silver pilgrim flask is a distinguished collectable, reflecting historical craftsmanship. In pristine condition, it serves for ceremonial toasts at milestone events or as an authentic accessory for historical gatherings. NOTE: * The pear-shaped form of the pilgrim flask (also known as a pilgrim vase and a pilgrim bottle) bears its roots from the leather flask carried by a pilgrim or traveller of the Middle Ages; depending on size, it would be used to carry water, wine or oil. Featuring a chain handle, it was designed for suspension from the shoulder, ensuring practicality and ease of transport. Condition This antique sterling silver vase is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The chased and cast decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body are all very clear; the maker's mark has wear in keeping with age and location. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this magnificent example of Victorian silverware.
