About the Item

A beautifully crafted silver-plated Etrog box manufactured by B. Henneberg of Warsaw circa 1900, combining refined Polish silversmithing with rich symbolic decoration inspired by the Four Species (Arba'at HaMinim) of the festival of Sukkot. Executed in a compact rectangular form raised on four ball feet, the box serves as both a protective vessel for the Etrog and an elegant expression of Jewish ceremonial art. The gently rounded body is framed by a continuous floral border of repeating blossoms encircling the lid and upper rim, lending the otherwise restrained form a delicate decorative richness. The hinged lid is centered by an oval cartouche engraved with the Hebrew inscription "בסוכות תשבו" ("You shall dwell in booths"), enclosed within a draped floral wreath. Flanking the central cartouche are finely engraved sprays depicting the Hadassim (myrtle) and Aravot (willow) branches, introducing the botanical theme that continues around the entire box. Each side of the box is engraved with one of the Four Species, accompanied by the corresponding biblical text from Leviticus 23:40. The front is divided into three panels depicting, from right to left, the Hadassim accompanied by the inscription "עץ עבות", the Etrog tree above the words "פרי עץ הדר", and the Aravot with the inscription "ערבי נחל". The reverse bears an engraved date palm, representing the Lulav, together with the words "כפות תמרים". The engravings thoughtfully depict not only the ritual species themselves but also the trees from which the Etrog and Lulav are derived, creating a harmonious visual interpretation of the biblical commandment. The two ends are equally decorative, one engraved with a finely rendered bound Lulav, Hadassim, and Aravot, faithfully illustrating the ritual bundle used during the festival, while the opposite side features a large naturalistic Etrog, its textured contours carefully engraved to emphasize the fruit's distinctive character. Opening the hinged lid reveals a spacious interior intended to safely house the Etrog throughout the festival. The underside bears the maker's mark of B. Henneberg, Warszawa, one of Poland's foremost silver manufacturers at the turn of the twentieth century, together with the model number.
