About the Item

Limoges porcelain fish service with a scalloped border evoking a shell, framing hand-painted aquatic decoration. The whole is enhanced with rich gilding and raised gold forming a delicate fishing net motif. A cohesive and fine quality service, testimony to the technical excellence of the best Limoges productions of the late 19th century. Composition of the service 12 plates — diam. 23 cm 1 large oval platter — 58.5 x 24 cm 1 round deep dish — diam. 25.5 cm 1 sauce boat The porcelain pieces were produced by the Redon manufactory, active in Limoges between 1891 and 1906; the decoration was carried out by the Carrié Draper workshop. Each piece features a scalloped and gilded border evoking a shell, echoing the marine theme of the decoration. The aquatic scenes, all different from one another, depict various species of freshwater and sea fish against backgrounds of seaweed, coral and shells in soft watercolour tones of pink, blue, green and ochre. A delicate fishing net motif in raised gilding runs across the surface of each piece, contributing to the overall refinement of the service.
