About the Item

A magnificent mid century whimsical silver plate and wood figural koi carp shaped pepper mill, made in Italy c. 1960. Made by Tre Spade in Italy in the 1960s, this design is known to have been retailed by Gucci. The body of the pepper mill grinder is made of wood with silver plated mounts. The upper fin detaches to reveal a hole where the pepper corns can be introduced. The pepper mill is operated by twisting the tail so that the fine ground pepper comes out of the koi carp’s mouth. It is stamped with the maker’s mark on the mill inside the mouth together with ‘Tre Spade’ and ‘Garantito’ (guaranteed). The plating has normal signs of age. The wood has a beautiful patina worn smooth over the years. It is a very tactile object and satisfying in the hand. It is a delightful conversation piece for the table, sure to be the centre of attention. It also does its job extremely well: it is in good working order and the pepper comes out beautifully fine. Tre Spade continue to produce high quality pepper mills to this day. The company describes itself thus: “For over 130 years, Tre Spade has embodied the excellence of Made in Italy, combining innovation, tradition, and passion to create high-quality kitchen tools. Founded in 1894, the company has grown with the mission of offering premium, functional kitchen equipment, from coffee grinders to food processing machines. Christofle Silver Plate Flower Shaped Caviar Set with Fish Spoons, Paris, c.1960

Christofle Silver Plate Flower Shaped Caviar Set with Fish Spoons, Paris, c.1960

By Christofle, Fleuron

Located in London, GB

A fine quality and wonderfully entertaining ‘Fleur de Poséidon’ / ‘Flower of Poseidon’ mid century silver plated fish-themed caviar set made by Christofle Fleuron in Paris, France, c. 1950-1960. The service displays as a flower whose petals can be removed for serving or tasting caviar, making it not just a visually stunning centrepiece, but also a fantastic interactive conversation piece. The caviar service has six spoons shaped as flower petals that stand upright in a variety of positions in the base: as an open flower, as an orchid, or as a closed flower in the shape of a lotus. In all instances the stylised fish design to the reverse of the spoons creates a very beautiful visual effect. The interior of the spoons is smooth with an elegant ridge to the centre. Intended for serving caviar, they can also be used for serving hors d’oeuvres, amuse-bouches or snacks. The base has a Renaissance-style dolphin to its centre whose curling tail adapts perfectly as a handle for the set. The dolphin is set above a floral fountain design for receiving the caviar spoons, which in turn sits upon an elegant Italianate pedestal. It is hallmarked with the maker’s mark ‘Fleuron France...
