About the Item

This large Mid-Century Modern wooden squirrel brush and crumb pan was designed by Max Méder in Paris, France, during the 1950s. Both decorative and practical, the set transforms an everyday table accessory into a charming example of postwar French design. The sculptural brush is carved in the form of a seated squirrel holding and eating a nut. Its expressive silhouette, pointed ears, rounded body, and finely modeled features give the piece a playful character while preserving the clean, stylized lines associated with French mid-century decorative arts. The squirrel’s generously curved tail is formed by the natural-bristle brush, creating an imaginative and highly functional design. Crafted from carefully selected noble woods, the squirrel displays rich brown tones and an attractive natural grain. It rests on a coordinating wooden crumb pan with a softly shaped, organic outline. When placed together, the two elements form a harmonious decorative composition suitable for display on a dining table, sideboard, bar, desk, or kitchen counter. The squirrel measures 6.7 inches high, 7.9 inches wide, and 2 inches deep (17 × 20 × 5 cm). The wooden pan measures 0.8 inches high, 8.25 inches wide, and 8.1 inches deep (2.1 × 21 × 20.5 cm). The underside is signed “Max Méder, Paris” and marked “Déposé,” confirming the registered French design. This collectible vintage Max Méder squirrel brush and pan is an engaging addition to a refined Mid-Century Modern interior, a French design collection, or a group of distinctive animal-form decorative objects. It combines craftsmanship, humor, and functionality in a particularly appealing Parisian design.
