About the Item

Nymphenburg Porcelain LOTOS Tea cup incl. tray with "Alchemie" Décor A true classic of German porcelain design, the LOTOS service was created in the early 1930s by Wolfgang von Wersin — an architect celebrated for his hallmark Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) aesthetic. Commissioned by the legendary Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, LOTOS is defined by its refined simplicity: gently flared bowls and gracefully upswept semicircular handles whose soft curvature evokes the tender opening of a flower in bloom. The decoration belongs to Nymphenburg's Alchemie collection — a series of painterly patterns born from spontaneous, experimental brushwork in the manufactory's atelier. What began as casual, side-by-side sketches evolved into compositions of remarkable tension and vitality. Few porcelain houses in the world can rival Nymphenburg in the sheer opulence and narrative richness of its decoration. It takes up to fifteen years before an apprentice is entrusted with the manufactory's most complex motifs, and much of this rarefied knowledge is passed down orally from one generation of painters to the next. Every artist mixes their own colors by hand — blending pigment powders produced in the in-house laboratory with turpentine, clove oil, and lavender oil — and must possess the deepest mastery to anticipate how each hue will transform in the kiln. This living tradition of porcelain painting at Nymphenburg has been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage under the protection of the German UNESCO Commission — a distinction as rare and enduring as the pieces themselves.
