About the Item

A charming and increasingly scarce set of ten antique French majolica plates produced by Saint-Clément, one of France’s most celebrated faience manufactories. Dating to the early twentieth century, each plate features a different fruit motif modeled in relief and hand-painted in vibrant naturalistic colors, including peaches, grapes, berries and other orchard fruits. Executed in richly glazed majolica with finely molded details, the plates embody the naturalistic decorative tradition for which Saint-Clément became renowned during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The varied fruit compositions create a lively yet cohesive set, while the subtle craquelure developed over time adds depth and authenticity that only age can impart. Beautiful for display, collecting, or use in an eclectic table setting, the set captures the warmth and artistry of French country house ceramics. Complete sets of this size are increasingly difficult to find, making it an especially appealing offering for collectors of antique majolica and French faience. Marked Saint-Clément, Made in France.

Set of Six Antique French Sarreguemines Majolica Fruit Plates, 1890

Set of Six Antique French Sarreguemines Majolica Fruit Plates, 1890

Located in Coral Gables, FL

An exceptional set of six antique French majolica fruit plates produced by Sarreguemines during the Belle Époque, one of the most celebrated periods in the history of French decorative arts. Each plate features a distinct fruit composition rendered in high relief, including strawberries, grapes, peaches, pears and other orchard fruits, emerging from richly modeled foliage that creates a remarkable sense of depth and movement across the surface. The hand-applied glazes display the warm ochre, green and burgundy tones characteristic of late nineteenth-century French majolica, while the finely detailed modeling reflects the technical sophistication for which the Sarreguemines workshops became internationally renowned. Founded in Lorraine in the eighteenth century, Sarreguemines played a central role in the development of French faience and majolica...

Set of 5 Hand-Painted Limoges Porcelain Plates with Scalloped Edges

Set of 5 Hand-Painted Limoges Porcelain Plates with Scalloped Edges

Located in Coral Gables, FL

A beautiful set of five Limoges France hand-painted porcelain decorative plates, each with a softly scalloped edge and naturalistic fruit decoration. The plates feature a warm painterly palette of greens, yellows, reds, and deep berry tones, with hand-painted clusters of grapes, cherries, berries, leaves, and soft botanical accents over a pale porcelain ground. Each plate varies slightly in composition, giving the group the charm of individually decorated porcelain while remaining visually cohesive as a set. The softly shaded backgrounds, fruit motifs, and scalloped rims give these plates a romantic French table presence, somewhere between decorative cabinet plates and light serving plates. They are especially lovely for wall display, open shelving, a china cabinet, or a layered table setting, and they can also be used for light serving of fruit, pastries, cookies, dry desserts, or small bites. Because of the hand-painted decoration and age of the porcelain, hand washing is recommended, and they should not be placed in the dishwasher or microwave. Limoges porcelain has long been admired for its fine white body, delicate decoration, and association with refined French domestic tableware. Hand-painted fruit and floral plates were especially popular in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Limoges production, often made as cabinet plates, dessert plates, or decorative table pieces. This set captures that tradition beautifully, with a collected, painterly quality and wonderful decorative warmth. Presented in vintage condition consistent with age and use, with light wear appropriate to hand-painted porcelain tableware. Minor surface variation, gentle gilt wear, or age-related marks may be present. A charming and decorative Limoges France set...
