About the Item

Whieldon Creamware Tortoiseshell Glaze Teapot, Staffordshire, Circa 1765 This Whieldon-type creamware teapot and cover is a superb example of mid-18th-century English pottery, its globular body covered in the rich, mottled brown manganese glaze known as "tortoiseshell" that became synonymous with Thomas Whieldon and the early partnership of Josiah Wedgwood. The vessel is modeled with a naturalistic crabstock spout and handle and decorated in relief with trailing grapevines issuing from the handle, with rare traces of the original honey gilding surviving on the relief — the mark of a high-status piece. The cover carries a matching branch finial with molded grape cluster and leaf. Tortoiseshell ware was made by dusting the unglazed body with metallic oxides beneath a clear lead glaze, the colors flowing and mingling in the kiln; Whieldon's Fenton Vivian factory, where the young Wedgwood was a partner from 1754 to 1759, set the standard for these naturalistic Rococo wares.
