This is a beautiful porcelain teapot made by New Hall in circa 1810, which was the Regency period. The pot has a white ground with a gracious cobalt blue and gilt pattern. This is a stunning example of New Hall's amazing skill in producing beautifully streamlined teapots. It was difficult in those days to fire these large oval yet round-bellied objects, and this pot is without a fault. What is even rarer is that is was preserved perfectly; there is no scratch and no damage, not even any crazing. The teapot rings like a bell when tapped. The teapot is made of the beautiful high quality porcelain with a greyish hue, as was usual in that period. British porcelain had only been introduced in the late 1790s and potters kept tinkering with their recipes; it took another 5 or 10 years before porcelain became fully white. This shape of teapot is sometimes called the "low oval" shape, and sometimes the "boat" shape. It has a wonderful collar rising towards the front of the lid, and the handle is very simple without a thumb rest - looking very classy. The lid has a beautiful gilt finial. The decoration is a beautiful geometric play of fans and garlands, done in restrained cobalt blue and lavish gilding, all applied by hand. The teapot comes with a stand, as was usual in those days. Neither of the items are marked as New Hall did not mark their items. Condition report: As mentioned, this teapot and stand are free from any damage, wear, rubbing or crazing - it can't be overestimated how rare it is to find one of these large objects of this period in such perfect condition. All items ring like a bell when tapped. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions: when placed upon the stand, the teapot measures 16.5cm (6.5") to the highest point (the top of the handle) and it measures 26.5cm (10.5") from handle to spout. The stand is 17cm (6 3/4") diameters at the longest point.
