About the Item

Two Danish Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica Porcelain Wine Coolers Danish, 20th Century Height 16cm, diameter 18cm These 20th century wine coolers come from the Flora Danica dinner service by Royal Copenhagen. The esteemed Flora Danica service, first conceived in the late 18th century, was designed not only as a triumph of craftsmanship but also as a diplomatic offering. Amid the 1788–89 conflict between Russia and Sweden, Denmark - although allied with Russia - did not provide military support. In 1790, King Christian VII commissioned the dinner service, inspired by the botanical illustrations of the Flora Danica booklets published in 1752, as a gesture of reconciliation. The service was completed in 1802, following the passing of Empress Catherine II of Russia in 1796. Each piece is meticulously hand-painted with detailed botanical imagery from the Flora Danica encyclopedia, the Latin name of the plant carefully inscribed on the reverse. Its exceptional artistry and limited production ensure it remains highly prized among collectors today. The wine coolers in this set are particularly remarkable. They feature delicate illustrations of Gratiola officinalis L. (gratiola), with the species noted in a handwritten mark on the base. Soft pastel hues highlight the plant’s subtle charm, while three-dimensional porcelain handles, shaped like flowering branches, enhance the naturalistic effect. Gilding on the base and rim adds a luxurious touch, and the panelled borders are decorated with gilt bosses - raised gold dots - from which pairs of leaves hang gracefully, framed within rectangular panels. The underside bears the iconic Royal Copenhagen three-wave mark, the maker’s stamp, and the model number. Of superb quality, these wine coolers celebrate the beauty and enduring legacy of the Flora Danica service, making them a distinguished addition to any collection.
