Obverse: DAT WELVAART EN SEGEN SY RYCK EN MILDE – ANNO, seated city maiden with horn of plenty and city coat of arms under which number 135 is engraved Reverse: BY AL DE LEDEN VAN T VETTE WARY GILDE – 1698, candles, hams, barrel, plate, etc. around crowned balance Ex auction Schulman 26 of 19 November 2001, no. 2167. Private purchase Jacques Schulman at the Oude Kunst- en Antiekbeurs Delft 1974. The fat guild, also known as fat melters, consisted of traders in "fat" goods as depicted on the reverse of the medal. It was one of the older guilds in Middelburg, although the first medals were not cast until 1647. For this beautiful issue with the rhyming inscription from 1698, the blacksmith Anthonis Felles was commissioned. That year, he cast 152 pieces in old copper.
