Ancient Greek Gold Coin of King Alexander the Great, 323 BC

About the Item

A gorgeous example of one of the most desirable ancient Greek coin types, with an exceptional pedigree. A solid gold ancient Greek stater minted in the name of the greatest military leader of antiquity, King Alexander the Great of Macedon. This example was issued at the Babylon mint, circa 317-311 BC. The obverse depicts the portrait of the goddess of wisdom and warfare, Athena. She is shown facing right, wearing an elegant pearl necklace, her lips pursed, her hair flowing out from under a plumed Corinthian helmet, adorned with a coiled snake. The reverse shows a standing figure of Nike, the goddess of victory, her beautiful wings spread wide. She holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched right hand and stylis (cross arm of a ship's mast) in her left. The legend in the left field reads: Basileos Alexandrou. "Of King Alexander". Mint mark and monogram in fields. Alexander captured nearly all of the known world and with it, a fantastic amount of gold bullion from his adversaries, the Persians. He used this gold to mint his famous coinage. Their beauty, high purity, lustre and association with Alexander has lead these coins to be fought for, traded, collected and hoarded throughout antiquity and into the present day. This is a top quality example of the type, a beautiful coin with an outstanding and very hard to find pedigree: At one point, in the possession of August Voirol (1884 - 1967) and, before that, appearing in Munzhandlung Basel's 10th auction, held in Spring of 1938. Weight: 8.55 g. Diameter: 19.40 mm. Provenance: From the collection of August Voirol (1884-1967). August Voirol was a successful gynaecologist with a passion for ancient coinage. He formed his collection over several decades, choosing the finest pieces and becoming a highly respected authority on the coins of the Roman world. Ex. Munzen und Medaillen, sale 38, 6th December 1968, lot 42. Ex. Munzhandlung Basel, auction 10, 15th March 1938, lot 208. Munzhandlung Basel was established and run by the third generation of the Cahn family, Herbert and Erich. This was the predecessor of the highly regarded auction house, Munzen und Medaillen.
