About the Item

This evocative Roman marble foot is a timeless remnant of the sculpture it was once part of. Sensitively carved and polished, it reveals the hand of a master sculptor, and hints at the beauty of the full statue in antiquity. Once forming part of one of the most renowned museum collections in the world, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it was likely discovered in Cyprus - a provincial outpost of the Roman Empire in antiquity - in the 1860s and 70s by famed excavator, Luigi Palma di Cesnola. With an illustrious provenance, and many options for display, it is a timeless and aesthetic reminder of antiquity.
