About the Item

Rare Pre-Columbian Nasca Ceramic Drum Vessel Culture: Nasca (Nazca), South Coast of Peru Period: ca. 200–600 CE (Early Intermediate Period) Material: Burnished ceramic with painted slip decoration Dimensions: 21 x 11 x 9 cm An unusual and striking Pre-Columbian ceramic vessel from the ancient Nasca culture, shaped in the form of a drum with an upright spout and wide arched handle. The body is finely burnished in dark brown-black, adorned with geometric motifs in contrasting ochre and black slip—possibly referencing textile patterns or symbolic motifs common in Nasca visual language. This vessel’s form, with its large flat base and vertical spout, resembles percussion instruments known from archaeological contexts, though it may have had a ceremonial or symbolic function beyond the musical. Excellent example of Nasca ceramic : hand-built, polished, and decorated with mineral-based pigments Handle and spout intact; minor wear on spout top consistent with age The painted band around the vessel showcases classic Nasca abstraction and symmetry An exceptional piece for collectors of Pre-Columbian art, Andean archaeology, or early ceremonial objects. Ex Rey Uk collection London collected before 1960
