Tlaquepaque is another town in the state of Jalisco with a long history of artesanos who worked with clay. Numerous styles developed there but the most renown was that of the figuras tipo, the small modeled figurines - fruit sellers, musicians, farmers - which so wonderfully captured the local color and now give us a glimpse of the daily life and attire of a bygone Mexico. Most outstanding however, both in size and detail were those of the mounted charros, cowboys, as the one being offered. Charreria, the world of horses - the feats and exercises performed when astride them, the outfits worn and the saddles strapped, began with the arrival of horses from Spain. Only the spanish conquerors were allowed to ride, it being completely forbidden for the indigenous people to do so. With the rise of the cattle ranches and the great expanse of territory that they required, this restriction was gradually lifted as the hired hand would have to travel great distances to tend the herds. The charro exercises developed mainly among farmhands and with time their prowess on the horse at such things as lassoing a bull became a way of life on the haciendas as well as popular events. Horses and wealth went hand in hand and the sumptuous suits of hand stitched leather, silver embroidered saddles and the like was standard fare. In the late 19th century, many accomplished charros toured the U.S. and Europe thrilling the crowds with their derring-do and today there are charreria associations. But the elegance and bravery that the word connotated as late as the beginning of the 20th century - especially with the most famous charros of all, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata - now evokes a romantic nostalgia of vast open plains, the gentleman farmer, and for better or worse, a way of life in Mexico of a vanished era.
