About the Item

This elegant pair of oval decorative plaques represents the refined artistry of late 19th-century French porcelain production. Made in Limoges and bearing the mark of Tharaud – Limoges, France on the reverse, the plaques are executed in the highly prized pâte-sur-pâte technique. Delicately modeled white cherubs emerge in soft relief against a serene powder-blue ground, creating a subtle play of depth and translucency characteristic of this demanding method. The subjects depict playful putti floating on clouds, holding garlands and symbolic attributes, inspired by neoclassical and romantic iconography popular during the Belle Époque. The modeling is fine and expressive, with particular attention paid to facial features, wings, and drapery. Each plaque is housed in its original gilt metal frame, finely worked with a decorative border that enhances the luminous contrast between the white reliefs and the blue background. The original easel backs are preserved, allowing the plaques to be displayed on furniture, consoles, or shelves. Based on the Tharaud mark, stylistic elements, and technique, this pair can be dated to circa 1880–1900. Decorative yet refined, these plaques are ideal for collectors of Limoges porcelain or 19th-century French decorative arts.
