About the Item

A delightful little vase made by Danish ceramicist Marianne Starck (1938-2007) in the 1960s. Partially glazed, it reveals the raw material of the stoneware, in this case chamotte clay with an interesting relief on the circular ring in the centre. The glaze is a very soft, elegant celadon green, a colour that was particularly popular in the early 20th century and revived by Scandinavian ceramists in the 1950s and 1960s. Marianne Starck was a German-born ceramist and designer who became a naturalised Danish citizen and whose work left its mark on the history of 20th-century ceramics. Born in northern Germany, she began as an apprentice potter before studying graphic design in Hamburg. In 1955, she moved to Denmark to the island of Bornholm to join the Michael Andersen & Søn ceramics factory. She remained there for nearly 40 years, serving as artistic director until 1993. Her works are now highly prized by collectors and are exhibited in several museums in the Nordic countries. They usually bear her initials ‘MS’ next to the factory's three-herring logo. The Michael Andersen workshop was founded in 1890 by Jens Michael Andersen (1859–1931) on the Danish island of Bornholm, which has been home to many ceramists for over two centuries. Michael Andersen trained as a ceramist with Lauritz Hjorth in Rønne, on the island of Bornholm. In 1890, he took over Th. Stibolt's ceramics business in Rønne under his own name. The ceramics business in question dated back to 1771. His four sons, all trained in ceramics, took over and the workshop became ‘Michael Andersen and Søn’ in 1916. With one of his sons, Daniel Andersen, the workshop developed its first small series in the 1900s. Then, upon the founder's death in 1931, the workshop moved on to larger series of vases, bowls, figurines, etc. In 1935, Daniel Michael Andersen received a gold medal for the quality of his glazes at the World's Fair in Brussels. The children participated in the development of the models, as did ceramists from outside the workshop, such as Helge Bjufstrøm and Marianne Starck, who became the artistic director. In the 1890s, the name was written in Gothic script on the pieces, then between 1900 and 1916 in Latin script. From 1916 onwards, the mark became MA&S for Michael Andersen & Søn. Finally, from 1930 onwards, the workshop adopted the coat of arms of the town of Rønne, where it was located, namely three fish of different sizes in a gradient. Most of the models have 4-digit numbers stamped on the back, with the first two digits apparently indicating the year of production, in this case 1963. This piece, an art piece, could be use with flowers or could be just a decorative piece.
