About the Item

British Sailor’s Woolwork of a Second Rate Ship of the Line Entering Port Circa 1865 This dramatically composed British sailor’s woolwork depicts a Royal Navy second rate ship of the line under full sail, making her grand entrance into port on a dynamic starboard view that seems to bear down upon the viewer. Her dark hull with white gun streaks is set off by a red waterline, and curling white water worked along the bow conveys her speed and power through the deep blue sea. She flies the White Ensign of the Royal Navy from the mizzen. To starboard she passes a prominent white lighthouse on a spit of land, worked with a gallery, windows, and a flight of steps, a beacon of home; a harbor crane stands at the water’s edge beyond. Small sailing craft dot the roadstead, another vessel rounds the distant headland, and the vast sky is worked in long horizontal stitches of cream and pale rose that throw the great ship into relief. Sailors’ woolworks, affectionately known as woolies, were worked by seamen in wool yarns at sea, ashore, and in retirement, as cherished mementos of their service. This example captures the Royal Navy at a moment of transition: the two-decked second rate, second in power only to a first rate flagship, represented the traditional backbone of the fleet even as the Navy shifted from sail to steam and from wooden walls to ironclads. Within a generation ships such as this would vanish from the seas, and the woolworks that record them survive as intimate documents of the last age of sail. Presented in a bird’s-eye maple frame. Condition: Good condition, with no repairs. Now glazed with museum UV conservation glass, protecting the wool fibers and original color from ultraviolet light while reducing glare.
