About the Item

Oglala Sioux Style War Headdress: 30"H with Drops 26"W. Typically, war headdresses like this one were composed of awarded coup feathers given to a warrior as an acknowledgement of battle deeds and other heroic accomplishments. The yellow and red dyed ermine on the back of the crown were a military society badge of honor indicating the warrior possessed significant knowledge, intellect and understanding of the needs of "The People." These two colors represented the great circle or wheel of life. The beaded brow band with a yellow background and green tipi lodges was indicative of the Earth Spirit representing youthfulness, fertility, growth and freedom. The green trade cloth drops hanging at the temples are beaded with "kill coups" showing the warrior is both practical and heroic.
