About the Item

Fine French School devotional painting depicting the seated Virgin and Child with the infant Saint John the Baptist, executed in gouache and tempera on parchment, dated 1811 verso. The composition draws inspiration from Renaissance Madonnas, with the tender interaction between the figures rendered in delicate pastel tones against a draped interior and distant landscape view. Particularly notable is the refined handling of the drapery and luminous colouring, giving the work an elegant early 19th century neoclassical character. Saint John is shown holding his reed cross and banner, identifying the traditional religious subject. Mounted in an antique gilt wooden frame which complements the painting beautifully. A charming and highly decorative French devotional work with strong Grand Tour and academic influences. France, dated 1811. Condition: overall good antique condition with age-related wear, light creasing and minor edge imperfections to the parchment, together with surface marks consistent with age. Frame with wear and rubbing to gilding. Ready to display.
