About the Item

This elegant blue and white 19th-century Coronation Quilt is composed entirely of indigo printed cottons arranged against a crisp ivory-white ground. Each Coronation block combines deep blue shirtings with tiny floral sprigs, delicate vine prints, striped calicoes, and miniature geometric patterns. The cornerstone nine-patch blocks link the pattern, all framed by the indigo and white border. The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with tiny and precise quilting stitches. The back is ivory-white cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very thin and very lightweight. Blue and white quilts have long been among the most sought-after examples of American textile art. Their graphic appearance allows them to complement both traditional interiors and contemporary spaces, making them favorites among collectors, designers, and museums alike.
